On Monday August 29, Prospect 360 will be hosting a Fashion Media Seminar at the Whitehouse Institute of Design, 672 Bourke Street, Melbourne, from 6.30pm to 9pm, for budding fashion writers and publicists aged 15 to 30.

Panellists include the prolific Melissa Hoyer, freelance stylist and The (Melbourne) Magazine's contributing fashion editor Kate Gaskin, freelance fashion journalist Emily Power (see on The Circle) and Anthea O'Connor, former Melbourne editor for Vogue Australia and fashion ambassador for the Westfield Group.

While the current fashion media landscape is ultra-competitive and ultra-crowded as every girl and her blog weighs in on each new season, O'Connor says standing out from the pack is about creating opportunities for yourself and demonstrating a willingness to go the extra mile by doing work experience or working as an event volunteer.

"The advent of social media and blogging in particular has completely changed the fashion journalism landscape," says O'Connor. "There are so many more fashion commentators now, which on one hand makes the industry much more accessible for people to get into, but then on the other hand there are so many voices that pop up, who might not “have done their time” through the traditional channels and gained the credentials of people before them, which is not necessarily a bad thing, just different."

Citing Lisa Armstrong of the UK Times, Christa D'Souza of UK Vogue and Clare Press, former fashion features director at Vogue Australia, as fantastic fashion writers, O'Connor says a good fashion journalist needs an "innate understanding and interest in fashion and style combined with being an excellent writer and researcher".

Greta Donaldson's Prospect 360 seminars were established in 2007 with the view to providing media-hungry young people with valuable behind-the-scenes insights and networking opportunities, helping some attendees to secure work and internships in the process.

The Prospect 360 Fashion Media Seminar will comprise two 45-minute panel sessions, including advice on how to get a foot in the door, as well as a Q&A session. Tickets are $130 each and include a Prospect 360 resource pack. You can book online at Prospect360.com.au or by calling (03) 9682 9666.
