GWAS Bulletin Board: Victoria Reichelt
Victoria Reichelt in Inside Out magazine May/June 2011
One of Inside Out magazine's 'Young at Art' ones to watch, long-time GWAS reader Victoria Reichelt is a finalist in the 2011 Mosman Art Prize for her work titled 'Uprising'.

The Queensland-based artist has made beauty out of her passion for magazines, creating photo-realist paintings based on her extensive collections. She told Inside Out, "Magazines offer a space to imagine, dream and think in."

In September, Reichelt will be heading to the 2011 Korea National Art Fair in Seoul. Leaving before her will be her solo exhibition "Shift", a series of paintings of magazines exploring the potential shift in the nature of how books and magazines are presented to us, from the physical to the digital, along with considering the motivations behind the collecting impulse and people's love of these objects.

The exhibition is a "monument to the magazines that live temporarily scattered around our homes, to be kept and collected or replaced with newer versions of themselves." The second largest art fair in Asia will exhibit works from 19 Australian galleries this year as part of the Year of Friendship between Australia and South Korea.

Reichelt also has her work featured in a new book, Bookwork: Medium to Object to Concept to Art by Garret Stewart (The University of Chicago Press). The book follows artists' passion for books to its extremities in interdisciplinary artists who employ found or simulated books as a sculptural medium in lone or gallery installations.

In 2009, Reichelt held an exhibition called "Spectrum" showcasing bookshelves stacked with hardbacks and best-sellers while her 2008 "Bibliomania: The Bookshelf Portrait Project" included the reading collections of seven Australian artists.

Congratulations to Victoria on all her recent accomplishments.
