Bulletin Board: Compassion Sunday (6 May, 2012)

In 1990 Margaret Makhoha became a sponsored child when she was 12 years old. Twenty one years later on May 17, 2011, Margaret became a senator in her country, Uganda. She is living proof that child sponsorship works.

Her amazing story gives hope to all child sponsors and the children under their financial and spiritual wing that poverty and circumstance can be overcome and you can achieve anything. All it takes is one person to say, 'I believe that you are worth it', 'I will find the time to write to you', and 'I can definitely afford $44 a month, even if I have to forgo new shoes to do it!' and one other person's life can be completely changed.

This Compassion Sunday, I'll be speaking on the liberty that comes with turning our attention from ourselves to helping someone else, knowing full well that sometimes you need to receive love to give love in kind, but that often the very source for that love isn't so far away at all (it's often our perception, self-assessment and cultural indoctrination getting in the way), and that putting love into practise first, without expectant results, isn't easy but is always worth the reward.
